Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Tonneins 47

The right reflexes to rescue an animal

Rescuing an animal is never easy when you are not trained in wildlife and a decision mistake can lead to you being in danger and endangering the animal.

Some animal behaviors can also be surprising and it is not always easy to distinguish normal from abnormal behavior. Know that our center is there to collect only animals that are injured or in danger of death, either because they suffer from a disease or because they are disoriented (in a state of hypothermia for example). It is therefore necessary to establish an accurate diagnosis of each situation before moving an animal.

So here’s our advice when you face with this situation:

1 Handle the animal only if it is in immediate danger If the animal is out of reach of an immediate prey or danger of human activity (passing road for example), we advise you to stay away from it and to describe its situation without manipulating it. We do not know what harm he may suffer (he could have broken bones) or what reaction he might have.
2 Do not give either food or water Each species has its own diet. Do you know that birds of prey should not be given water? They could die. Do not attempt to feed an animal without consulting our professionals.
3 Give us a call

Find our number in the contact page, as well as our opening hours.

We may not be the closest care center to you. You can check with our network here: www.reseau-soins-faune-sauvage.com

4 Help us to establish the right diagnosis Our exchange should allow us to draw up an identity card of the animal (its species, its age, its state of health). For this we will ask you to observe the animal.
5 Bring us the animal as fast as possible If our center is not the closest to your location, our healers will give you the number of the nearest center. Know that our healers will not be able to move directly because we do not have the staff to carry out the rounds. You will have to bring us the animal on our opening hours and we thank you. Find our opening hours in the contact page. We will tell you how to transport the animal.

Finally, be aware that some species cannot be supported by our center because the legislation prohibits it. It will therefore be necessary to leave the animal in nature.
